Sons- Levi Sanders (with Susan Mott Glaeser - Insurance senior analyst), Davidĭaughters- Carina Driscoll, Heather Titus Judging the situation, Sanders announced that he won't attend the convention, and would instead go to Puerto Rico to meet with Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz of San Juan. But, it stirred controversy before he could come, as many objected his presence, it being a women-centric event. In October 2017, he was supposed to attend a conference at the Women's Convention. In August 2016, Sanders bought a $600,000 beachfront summer home, which was criticized by many Americans who were finding it hard to buy a home in the U.S.If it happens, our country will look a different way from across the sea than it ever has, because no one alive today has ever seen the US with a president that represents the poor.Father- Eli Sanders (Author, Paint salesman)īrother- Larry Sanders (Social worker, Health Spokesperson of the Green Party of England and Wales)Ī bungalow in Burlington, Vermont (VT), USA While our corrupt politicians may try to steal the election from him, with a win overwhelming enough there is nothing they can do, so at least our democracy is good enough that we still have a shot at electing a man that represents the poor. One good presidential candidate per lifetime is not a great track record for our modern country. For many of us for the first time in our entire lives we see a politician that actually deserves our vote, instead of voting for the least awful person. The reason we're so excited by Bernie is because he rejects all of that corruption completely, he always has, and he has a plan to at least make the problem less bad in our country. Our system just makes it harder than in Russia. They still try to control the outcomes of our elections.

Our democracy may be pretty good compared to what you have going on in Russia, but European nations do a much better job of having "truly democratic societies." In the US we still have deeply entrenched power held by corrupt, self-serving politicians that will make everyone's lives worse as much as they can as long as it leads to more personal profit. I'm kind of surprised that meme his how you know him best when it's probably the thing he's least known for here. Yes, this is him, and yes he's running for president. Is a little nuance, and a little recognition of the contributions of others, really too much to ask? Sanders is not the messiah, and the people around him, including the people in Burlington City Council, are not 100% evil regressives that Sanders (and only Sanders, apparently) struggled valiantly to overcome. Sanders has supported the LGBT community, but I dislike how so many of his supporters insist on exaggerating both the extent and the importance of his support. Maybe it's mentioned in the article this photo from 1986 was pulled from? Given the other inaccuracies presented so far, I would like some verification. Possibly the jibe about the City Council (who, remember, voted in favour of designating 25 July as an official Pride day) wanting to "oust" Sanders is true, bu it's currently unsupported. Sanders' contribution, in 1983 at least, was to give the date of Pride official government recognition, successfully designating July 25 as "Lesbian and Gay Pride Day." Again, a positive contribution, but the idea that a government official even needed to "let" people have a gay Pride march is fanciful. Actually the First Amendment guarantees that such parades can happen with or without council approval.

This earlier post from a pro-Sanders subreddit falsely describes Sanders as "letting" people have a Pride parade in Vermont. Credit is due to Mayor Bernie Sanders for his work in securing that vote, and even to bringing up that vote in the first place, but let's not go overboard. Contrary to the hagiography that paints Sanders as the sole voice in the wilderness of a massively bigoted City Council that had it in for him, a resolution supporting the Vermont Pride parade of 1983 was supported by a vote of the Council of Aldermen 6 to 5. This is pretty insulting to Burlington City Council.
